Thirty project proposals were received in the seventh competitive round. After preliminary screening, the IIE/State Department final review committee designated five projects for funding. Details of the five funded projects follows:
Mr. Illac Angelo Diaz (2005-06, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Philippines). Mr. Diaz’s project intends to build a nine classroom disaster-resistant bamboo prototype school in the Nato Province. This school would provide shelter against the country’s constant earthquakes and heavy typhoons. The project will also study new blueprints for safety facilities that provide a dual purpose design; classrooms will serve as both a place of learning and a place of refuge from the vulnerable climate.
Total award amount: US$8,000; cost sharing amount: US$15,930.49
Ms. Zarina Juareva (2007-08, University of Minnesota, Tajikistan).
Ms. Juareva’s project aims to raise awareness for the hundreds of children working in the streets of Dushanbe City by providing HIV/AIDS prevention training and information campaigns. The project also plans to build capacity for two Social Service centers to work directly with children on HIV/AIDS prevention activities.

Mr. Gabriel Kpadonou Hounsa (2007-08, University of California, Davis, Benin).
Mr. Hounsa’s project will promote access to clean drinking water in rural areas. The project aims to train artisan groups to build and cook with solar cookers as well as educate the population in ways to prevent water born diseases.

Ms. Jelena Mazurkievic (2005-06, Penn State University, Serbia).
Ms. Mazurkievic’s project plans to create new programs in the education of children with multiple disabilities by implementing the Augmentative and Alternative Communication Method. This project also seeks to gain state and regional collaboration by exchanging views and networking with government officials in order to create new legislation for disabled children.

Mr. Nguyen Tran Nhan Tanh (2007-2008, University of California, Davis, Vietnam).
Mr. Tanh’s project aims to build a network of key people throughout the Mekong River region (Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, China, and Vietnam) in order to establish national and regional leadership networks for sustainable water resources management.
